Travancore of Kerala was the cradle of Syromalabar Christianity from the time of St. Thomas Apostle onwards. Pala and surrounding area was a strong basin of this apostolic Church. Madahvath family belonged to the Marangattupally parish near Pala, and their faith root extends to the maniyapra family which was one of the most ancient catholic families in the area. Francis Madavath and Rosa were very devout Catholics and hardworking farmers who lived at paalakkattumala, within the area of Marangattupally parish. A fourth child was born to them on 25th November, 1930, who was baptized with the name Francis on the fifth day of birth by Rev. Fr. Joseph Theruvappuzhakathanar at Marangattupally parish Church. It was the post war time and the little Francis who was given the name paappachan spend his early childhood experiencing all the hardship of war. There was severe scarcity for food. However the family stood together under the strong canopy of devotion to God and the bond of love. Francis and Rose trained their eight children in devotion to God and parental love. For Father Armond the poor but devout family atmosphere turned out to be the perfect setting for his future journey in faith.<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The education process of a child in the early years of 20th century in Kerala normally started with\u00a0aashan \u00a0kalari (\u00a0<\/em>a single man headed system where the\u00a0aasan\u00a0<\/em>or master would teach the students to write the alphabets and other basic lessons).\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Pappachan too was introduced to the world of learning through\u00a0ashan kalari.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em>It was a sort of pre-schooling system. \u00a0Pappachan did his preliminary education at St. Thomas School Marangattupally. After completing the 4th form he joined the Enghlish School at the same place. First Stage of God's Call<\/h2> <\/div>\n

Pappachan\u00a0 \u00a0from \u00a0the very\u00a0 early \u00a0years \u00a0onwards\u00a0 \u00a0was\u00a0 very \u00a0much attracted\u00a0 \u00a0by the life of St. Francis \u00a0of Assisi, \u00a0the patron saint of his home parish. \u00a0He sensed the divine \u00a0call as early as 12 years \u00a0of\u00a0 age. \u00a0Fr. \u00a0Leo Keeprath \u00a0a capuchin missionary \u00a0working at Ajmeer \u00a0but hailing from Kadaplamatton\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0happened\u00a0\u00a0 to preach \u00a0about\u00a0 \u00a0the \u00a0missionary\u00a0\u00a0 life \u00a0of \u00a0priests\u00a0 \u00a0in \u00a0the \u00a0Church. Listening \u00a0to the inspiring\u00a0 preaching \u00a0of Fr. \u00a0Leo, \u00a0Pappachan\u2019s \u00a0heart \u00a0began \u00a0to throb with the desire to become \u00a0a missionary priest. Franciscan Capuchin Formation<\/h2> <\/div>\n

After \u00a0completing \u00a0the school \u00a0at Ajmeer, \u00a0and growing\u00a0 \u00a0in\u00a0 love for Jesus Francis\u00a0 \u00a0decided\u00a0 \u00a0to join\u00a0\u00a0 the capuchin\u00a0 \u00a0order\u00a0 \u00a0and \u00a0he \u00a0started \u00a0his \u00a0Franciscan\u00a0 \u00a0formation \u00a0at Capuchin Minor seminary Goa in 1952.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Bro. \u00a0Francis was very good at English\u00a0 and Latin and was an exemplary \u00a0brother for all. \u00a0Consequently\u00a0 \u00a0the superiors promoted \u00a0Francis after an year to Novitiate\u00a0 \u00a0and he was given\u00a0 the name \u00a0Armond.\u00a0<\/p><\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Novitiate & Philosophy<\/h2> <\/div>\n

Novitiate \u00a0was a time \u00a0for Bro. Armond to deepen \u00a0his \u00a0vocation \u00a0where \u00a0he used\u00a0 to \u00a0spend hours \u00a0in prayer \u00a0and solitude \u00a0on the banks of\u00a0Nethravathi\u00a0<\/em>river at Farnakipet. Successfully\u00a0\u00a0 completing \u00a0the rigorous religious \u00a0experience of Novitiate \u00a0he made \u00a0his first profession \u00a0on \u00a013th \u00a0May \u00a01954 \u00a0and became \u00a0an official \u00a0member of the\u00a0 Capuchin\u00a0 \u00a0Order. \u00a0Next \u00a0stage \u00a0of \u00a0formation\u00a0 \u00a0was\u00a0 philosophy \u00a0at Thillery Ashram \u00a0Quilon which \u00a0extended\u00a0 \u00a0for \u00a0three \u00a0years.<\/p><\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Theology<\/h2> <\/div>\n

Theology\u00a0 \u00a0study \u00a0at Kottagiri,\u00a0 \u00a0was \u00a0a \u00a0period \u00a0of\u00a0 personal struggle\u00a0 \u00a0for \u00a0Bro. \u00a0Armond \u00a0due to the unexpected\u00a0 \u00a0demise \u00a0of two of \u00a0his \u00a0elder \u00a0brothers.\u00a0 \u00a0But these personal\u00a0 \u00a0losses and the tragic\u00a0 situation \u00a0at home could not make \u00a0any change in his firm resolve to follow \u00a0the Lord consequently \u00a0he made the final profession \u00a0on 13th \u00a0May,\u00a01957. \u00a0His Excellency \u00a0Bishop \u00a0Antony Padiyara \u00a0of Ooty diocese ordained Fr. The first appointment of Fr. Armond was at St. Bonaventure friary Ponnurunny, near Eranakulam. he was transferred\u00a0to\u00a0Nazareth ashram Aluva, where he engaged in similar\u00a0 type\u00a0 of services that he started\u00a0 at Ponnurunni.\u00a0A \u00a0deep \u00a0sense \u00a0of \u00a0God \u00a0was \u00a0very \u00a0much \u00a0visible\u00a0\u00a0 in \u00a0the \u00a0activities of Fr.Armond. \u00a0He \u00a0was meticulous \u00a0in punctuality\u00a0 \u00a0and at the same time\u00a0 very considerate \u00a0to the needs \u00a0of \u00a0others.\u00a0 \u00a0The \u00a0spirituality \u00a0that \u00a0he \u00a0exposed\u00a0through his\u00a0hours\u00a0of prayer \u00a0before the Blessed \u00a0Sacrament \u00a0helped the superiors \u00a0to find a good confessor in him for the novices.\u00a0<\/p><\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Two years after the \u00a0completion \u00a0of the degree \u00a0Fr. Armond was appointed \u00a0as the new novice \u00a0master at \u00a0Muvattupuzha\u00a0 in 1969.\u00a0After \u00a0two years\u00a0\u00a0 he \u00a0became \u00a0the \u00a0superior\u00a0 \u00a0of \u00a0Loreto \u00a0Ashram Muvattupuza\u00a0 \u00a0where he served until 1973. A young friar walking with rosary \u00a0in his hand and at the same time \u00a0working hard along with the novices in the field with spade was an inspiring image of a priest,\u00a0recollect \u00a0even today \u00a0the people \u00a0around \u00a0the Ashram\u00a0 when they remember Fr. Next transfer \u00a0for him was to Bharanaganam but with a new mission namely to be the director of Franciscan Third Order of the Pala Diocese, which was flourishing at that time because of the mission preaching of Fr. Special Empowering of the Holy Spirit<\/h2>

God in His plan had preserved a precious gift for Fr. Armond which he received during the first charismatic retreat at Christ Hall in Calicut in January, 1976.\u00a0 \u00a0It was during this retreat that he felt an inner call of the Holy Spirit which he had deepened by participating at two more retreats at Kottayam and Bangalore \u00a0in the same year and felt fully bathed in the Spirit of the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0 Prompted by the Lord along with Fr. Grecian Capuchin and Fr. A.K. Today \u00a0Pattaram\u00a0 \u00a0is getting \u00a0known \u00a0more \u00a0in the\u00a0 name \u00a0of Fr. \u00a0Armond is a clear\u00a0 sign of his sanctity \u00a0and a source of consolation \u00a0for people.\u00a0 \u00a0All those who had some personal experience with \u00a0Fr. Armond \u00a0have said,\u00a0 in one accord that they had no negative \u00a0thing to state about Fr. Armond. \u00a0This \u00a0indicates \u00a0the high\u00a0 level \u00a0of spiritual \u00a0integrity \u00a0that he possessed. \u00a0People used to narrate \u00a0with tears of joy the simplicity, \u00a0care, concern and forgiveness \u00a0of Fr. Armond. \u00a0Calling Jesus \u00a0as elder brother in his own words \u00a0chettai \u00a0<\/em>and the Holy Spirit as the true Friend and the God \u00a0as \u00a0Father \u00a0emotionally \u00a0reveals \u00a0the \u00a0deep \u00a0level \u00a0of oneness that \u00a0Fr. As \u00a0years \u00a0passed \u00a0by \u00a0Fr. \u00a0Armond \u00a0was \u00a0very \u00a0much \u00a0focused \u00a0on \u00a0the \u00a0completion of \u00a0the\u00a0 new building\u00a0 \u00a0for \u00a0the \u00a0retreat \u00a0centre.\u00a0\u00a0 By \u00a0the \u00a0end \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0year \u00a02000\u00a0 he \u00a0was \u00a0showing \u00a0signs \u00a0of prolonged\u00a0 \u00a0cough \u00a0for which, \u00a0he applied\u00a0 \u00a0some local medicines. \u00a0As the problem \u00a0still persisted he \u00a0was \u00a0taken \u00a0to better \u00a0hospitals \u00a0like Trissur \u00a0amala\u00a0 where \u00a0cancer \u00a0was \u00a0diagnosed. \u00a0The real holiness \u00a0of Fr. Armond became tangible \u00a0for all by the way he accepted \u00a0sister \u00a0sickness \u00a0like a true\u00a0 Franciscan. \u00a0A suggestion \u00a0to move \u00a0to Bharanganam \u00a0where he lived \u00a0for 17\u00a0 years was not acceptable\u00a0 \u00a0to \u00a0Fr. Armond \u00a0for he wanted \u00a0to\u00a0 live \u00a0at the \u00a0small house \u00a0at Pattaram \u00a0and to be buried \u00a0at Iritty.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Endless prayers \u00a0and rosaries filled the atmosphere \u00a0of Pattaram by hundreds of people \u00a0for Fr. Armond. \u00a0However he stood \u00a0silently consoling \u00a0all those\u00a0 who sympathized with him \u00a0hiding \u00a0the excruciating \u00a0pain that he experienced \u00a0with a simple smile on his face. Amidst the praise \u00a0and worship \u00a0of a lot of people \u00a0near his bead Fr. Armond\u2019s\u00a0 \u00a0soul joined \u00a0the eternal abode \u00a0of Trinity \u00a0leaving his body behind \u00a0on 12th January,2001. \u00a0His mortal remains were laid to rest \u00a0at the heart of Vimalagiri \u00a0by Bishop \u00a0Paul Chittilappally \u00a0of Thamarassery \u00a0Diocese, \u00a0in the presence \u00a0of thousands \u00a0of people \u00a0belonging \u00a0to all walks \u00a0of life \u00a0and different religions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Death  is the moment  of the birth of a saint. As the burial flowers faded away people began to replace  new  flowers  and candles  at the tomb of Fr. Armond, announcing  to the world that a saint  is living  here behind the cemented  slabs.  People began to flock  to the tomb interceding Fr.
